Travelling by train is a great way to travel and evoke past times. Romantic and adventurous times when Simplon Orient Express passed through Venice, Zagreb and Belgrade to reach Istanbul with a dash of Agatha Christie's mystery.
Times are much simpler and faster nowadays. Trains are a convenient and fast means of travel for adventurers, young groups and people looking for an alternative way to travel. Croatia point-to-point rail tickets
The Croatian rail network is very well developed. The main rail line enters Croatia from Slovenia, passes through Zagreb, Slavonski Brod and Vinkovci to continues to Serbia and further south.
Zagreb is the main point you need to reach when travelling to Croatia by rail. From Zagreb (Zagreb Gl kol) you can choose to continue your journey to Split, Rijeka or Osijek. Some lines go straight from European capitals to Split, but if there is no direct line to Split, target Zagreb and connect to another train going for Split. All tickets can be purchased through ACP Rail's European train tickets.
Croatia (and region) rail pass
Having a Europe Rail Passes is a great and economical way to travel by train. At the end of the trip, when you summarise all your point-to-point tickets, they usually end up being quite pricey. In some countries, there may be some additional costs for seat reservation, but you will still save more money than buying point-to-point tickets.
There two basic types of rail passes to get:
- InterRail passes - InterRail Passes can only be used by European residents.
- Eurail passes - You can buy a Eurail Pass if you are a resident of a non-European country.
Which pass to choose?
InterRail Global Pass, available only to European residents can be used in 30 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, FYR Macedonia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Montenegro, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
There are various discounts that apply, depending on your age. Per instance, if you are younger than 25, you have a discount for travelling in 2nd class. Children under 11 pay half the adult fare, while children under age of 4 travel free. There are flexible solutions for pass validities - 5 days within 10 days or 10 days within 22 days - or you could purchase a fixed time valid pass - 15 days, 22 days or 1 month.
InterRail Croatia Pass can be used only in Croatia and can be valid for 3, 4, 6 or 8 days within 1 month. Some trains might require a seat reservation, so be ready for a small additional surcharge.
Eurail Global Pass can be used to travel through 24 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
There are various discounts, even for adults! If you are travelling in a group of 2 to 5, you get 15% discount. Other discounts apply to young travellers (under 25) and children. You can choose from a pass valid for 10 days in 2 months to a pass valid fore even 3 months!
Eurail Select Pass is a perfect pass for travellers who want to explore a selected region or group of countries. You can select 3, 4 or 5 bordering countries between Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey and make your own, personalised pass.
Same discounts apply as for Eurail Global Pass, while validities ranges from 5, 6, 8, 10 or (15) days within 2 months.
Eurail has three passes specific for Croatia, aside Eurail Select Pass. They are Eurail Croatia Pass, Austria - Croatia/Slovenia Eurail Pass and Croatia/Slovenia - Hungary Eurail Pass.
Austria - Croatia/Slovenia Eurail Pass and Croatia/Slovenia - Hungary Eurail Pass provide a great way to experience the history of these parts, architectural and cultural similarities and see some of the most beautiful sceneries that Europe can offer.
