Yes, General Marmont was a conquerer but he did a lot regarding infrastructure developments in Split. Today the city's most visited street bears his name.
The marble-lined street is the main shopping area in Split for designer and branded goods. Although mostly for women, you will find jewelry stores, clothing stores, shoe stores and other goods and brands such as Bershka, Paul&Shark, Tommy Hilfiger, Zara, Benetton, O'Neill, Mexx, Skiny, Naf Naf, Benetton, La Coste, Robe di Kappa, Diesel, Gas....
Most popular of all is the Fish Market, housed in a Secession style building with ironworks and white stone slabs displaying the freshest catch.
A bit of history:
During his mandate and thanks to his commitment, a lot has been done on the construction of transportation infrastructure in Dalmatia (roads through Zagora, Strada Marmont to Dubrovnik..) and for education (French authorities have introduced the Croatian and Slovenian language in school).
In his time the first newspaper in the Croatian language "Kraglski Dalmatin" has been launched.
