The Zagreb Funicular is the oldest means of public transport in Zagreb and one of the city's best-known landmarks. Connecting the Lower Town with the historic Upper Town, it has preserved its distinctive appearance and is protected as a cultural monument.
The funicular reopened on 19 May 2026 after its first comprehensive reconstruction in more than 50 years. The historic character was retained while the stations, track, propulsion and braking systems and passenger cabins were extensively modernised.
About Zagreb Funicular
With a track only 66 metres long, the Zagreb Funicular is the world's shortest funicular used for public transport. The journey between the Lower and Upper Town takes only about 64 seconds.
The lower station is located on Tomićeva Street, a short walk from Ban Jelačić Square, while the upper station stands beneath Lotrščak Tower in Zagreb's Upper Town.
The funicular opened in 1890 and has been carrying Zagreb residents and visitors between the two parts of the city ever since. Its early years were not always trouble-free, with technical failures occasionally interrupting operations, but the funicular eventually became one of Zagreb's most recognizable symbols.
The 2025–2026 reconstruction preserved the traditional exterior appearance while introducing new passenger cabins, modern operating and braking systems, climate control, CCTV and improved passenger communication and accessibility.

Zagreb Funicular tickets and prices
The Zagreb Funicular is operated by Zagreb Electric Tram, better known as ZET.
A regular one-way funicular ticket costs €0.66. A special on-demand ride outside the normal departure sequence costs €3.32.
Tickets can be purchased at the funicular stations. Valid ZET monthly, annual, daily and multi-day tickets can also be used on the funicular.
The Zagreb Card does not currently include a free ride on the funicular.
Regular departures operate every 10 minutes, including Sundays and public holidays.
Zagreb Funicular operating hours
The funicular normally operates every day from approximately 06:30 until 22:00, with departures every 10 minutes.
Temporary interruptions can occur for maintenance or operational reasons, so travelers making a special journey specifically to ride the funicular may wish to check current ZET service information before visiting.
Zagreb Funicular safety
The Zagreb Funicular has an exceptional operating record. According to the City of Zagreb and ZET, it has carried passengers for more than 130 years without a recorded accident involving its operation.
The propulsion, control and braking systems were comprehensively modernised during the 2025–2026 reconstruction while retaining the historic character of the railway.
The funicular travels at a maximum operating speed of approximately 1.5 metres per second and completes the 66-metre journey in about 64 seconds.
Zagreb Funicular capacity
Each Zagreb Funicular cabin accommodates 28 passengers, with 16 seated places and 12 standing places.
Accessibility
The 2026 reconstruction significantly improved accessibility at the Zagreb Funicular. The stations and passenger areas were adapted to provide easier access for passengers with disabilities, including tactile guidance surfaces and improved access to the cabins.
This can make the funicular particularly useful for visitors who would otherwise find the steep streets and steps between Zagreb's Lower and Upper Town difficult to manage.
Why ride the Zagreb Funicular?
The funicular covers a distance that can easily be walked, but the ride is worthwhile for its history and character rather than as a time-saving journey.
In just over a minute you travel from Tomićeva Street to the Upper Town, emerging beside Lotrščak Tower and the Strossmayer Promenade. From here, many of Zagreb's most important Upper Town sights are within easy walking distance.
The funicular is particularly convenient when combining the Lower Town with attractions around Gradec, St Mark's Square and the surrounding historic streets.
How to find the Zagreb Funicular
The lower station is on Tomićeva Street, just off Ilica and only a short walk from Ban Jelačić Square.
The upper station is located beneath Lotrščak Tower beside the Strossmayer Promenade in Zagreb's Upper Town.
Because the line is only 66 metres long, the two stations are close together geographically but separated by the steep rise between Lower and Upper Town.
