Gundulić Square Market

Gundulić Square Market is Dubrovnik Old Town's morning produce market, where fresh fruit and vegetables share the square with candied orange peel, dried figs, lavender and traditional products.

Farmers sell seasonal produce here in the morning, while other stalls cater to visitors looking for local sweets, gifts and handmade products. If you are already exploring Dubrovnik Old Town, it is an easy place to browse for a few minutes. If seeing a larger working local food market is the main purpose of the trip, Gruž is the stronger choice.

What the morning market is like

Early in the day, Gundulić Square still works as a produce market. Depending on the season, expect fruit and vegetables alongside honey, dried fruit and other food products. The balance changes through the morning, and the stalls aimed at visitors become more noticeable than they would be at a neighbourhood market outside the city walls.

That tourist-facing side is not necessarily a reason to skip it. Gundulić Square is convenient, compact and surrounded by the Old Town sights most visitors are already walking between. Just do not expect the scale or everyday grocery-shopping atmosphere of Gruž.

What to buy at Gundulić Square Market

You will usually find a mix of fresh produce, traditional sweets and small gifts aimed at visitors..

• Arancini - strips of candied bitter orange peel, a traditional Dubrovnik sweet. Do not confuse them with the Sicilian rice balls that share the name.
• Dried figs and candied almonds - easy edible souvenirs and long-standing Dalmatian market products.
• Fresh fruit and vegetables - selection changes with the season and the vendors present that morning.
• Lavender products - including scented bags, soaps and similar small gifts.
• Honey, liqueurs and rakija - availability and origin vary between stalls.
• Handmade products - lace, embroidery and other traditional or craft items appear alongside the food stalls.

Morning produce market, later traditional stalls

Sanitat Dubrovnik, the official operator of the city's retail markets, lists the Old Town market at Gundulićeva poljana as open Monday to Saturday from 06:00 to 13:00.

In season, separate traditional-product stalls on part of Gundulić Square can operate later than the produce market. For fruit, vegetables and the morning-market atmosphere, go before 13:00.

Gundulić or Gruž Market?

For most short-stay visitors, Gundulić Square is the easier market to see because it is already inside the Old Town. It works well for fruit, traditional sweets and a quick browse between sightseeing stops. For food shopping and a better look at Dubrovnik's everyday market life, go to Gruž Market. The Gruž market is larger, sits beside the city's separate fish market and serves residents as well as visitors passing through the port area.

The noon pigeon feeding

One piece of old Gundulić Square character is still associated with the market. At noon, pigeons gather around the monument to Dubrovnik poet Ivan Gundulić for their daily feeding. As the bells ring, the quiet roofs around the square suddenly empty and the birds descend toward the monument. You do not need to plan the whole morning around it, but if you are still at the market close to noon, stay a few minutes. This is one part of the old description of Gundulić Square that is worth keeping.

At the foot of the Jesuit Stairs

Gundulić Square sits below the Baroque staircase leading to St Ignatius Church. That location makes the market particularly easy to combine with sightseeing in the southern part of the Old Town without making a separate trip for it.
