Firule beach

Firule Beach is a small sandy beach in Split, about 1.6 km east of the city centre and just beyond Bačvice and Ovčice. Its fine sand, sheltered bay and very shallow water make it one of the best beaches in Split for families with young children.

Firule is also easy to reach from central Split on foot. It feels more relaxed and neighborhood-oriented than Bačvice while still having cafés, restaurants and other facilities close to the beach.

What is Firule Beach like?

Firule sits in a naturally sheltered cove with a genuine sandy shoreline, something relatively unusual on the Croatian coast. The beach is small rather than expansive, with the surrounding neighborhood, promenade and tennis courts immediately behind it.

The seabed remains shallow for a considerable distance, so the water warms quickly in summer and children have plenty of space for paddling and playing close to shore.

That shallow water is also Firule's main trade-off. Adults looking for deeper water and longer swims may prefer a beach such as Kašjuni, while Firule is strongest as a relaxed family and neighborhood beach.

Is Firule Beach good for children?

Firule is one of Split's best beaches for families with small children. The combination of fine sand, gradual entry and a protected bay makes it easier for young swimmers than the city's pebble beaches.

There is also a children's playground close to the beach, while cafés and restaurants in the surrounding Firule area make it easy to combine a few hours of swimming with lunch or a drink.

The beach is relatively compact and can become busy during July and August, so families who want more space should arrive earlier in the day.

Swimming at Firule

The shallow sandy seabed makes Firule particularly good for paddling, playing in the water and less-confident swimmers. Entry is much softer underfoot than at Split's pebble beaches, so water shoes are generally not necessary for the main sandy section.

Because the water is shallow, sand can become stirred up when the beach is crowded. Visitors primarily interested in clear, deeper water for longer swims may find other Split beaches more suitable.

Facilities at Firule Beach

Firule has useful beach and neighborhood facilities without feeling like a large resort complex. Current facilities around the beach include showers and changing cabins, while restaurants and cafés are located immediately nearby.

A children's playground and the long-established Firule tennis courts are also close to the bay. The tennis centre gives this part of Split a distinctly local sports-and-residential atmosphere rather than the tourist-resort character of some larger beaches.

Commercial services can vary by season, particularly outside summer, so visitors coming in spring, autumn or winter should check individual restaurants and facilities if they are important to the visit.

Shade at Firule

Trees around parts of the bay provide some natural shade, especially around the edges and behind the beach, but the sandy shoreline itself is not shaded throughout the day.

In the middle of summer, bring sunscreen and other sun protection rather than relying entirely on finding a shaded position.

Getting to Firule Beach

Walking from central Split

Walking is the easiest way to reach Firule if you are staying in central Split. From the main bus station or ferry port, follow the waterfront east towards Bačvice.

Continue along the coastal promenade through Ovčice and Firule. The route keeps you close to the sea and is much more pleasant than approaching through busy city streets.

Firule is within comfortable walking distance of Split's historic centre, making it easy to combine swimming with sightseeing on the same day.

Walking and jogging along the coast

The waterfront promenade linking the city centre, Bačvice, Ovčice, Firule and the beaches farther east is also popular for walking and jogging. It is particularly pleasant in the morning and towards evening when summer temperatures are lower.

Parking at Firule

Visitors arriving by car can find street and garage parking in the surrounding Firule area, but spaces close to the beach can be difficult to find during busy summer periods.

If you are already staying in or near central Split, walking is usually easier than driving specifically to Firule.

Firule Beach or Bačvice Beach?

Firule and Bačvice are both sandy and shallow, but they offer noticeably different beach experiences.

Choose Firule if you want the sand and shallow water of Bačvice in a smaller, calmer setting. Choose Bačvice if being closer to the historic centre and having a livelier beach atmosphere matter more.

Is Firule Beach worth visiting?

Firule is particularly worth visiting for families with younger children and travelers who want a sandy beach within walking distance of central Split. Its shallow sheltered bay is easier for paddling and children's swimming than many of Split's pebble beaches.

It is less suitable for swimmers looking for deep water, travelers wanting a large modern beach complex or anyone who needs lots of space during the busiest part of summer.
