Parks in Zagreb
There are few cities in which parks and gardens are so inter meshed as in Zagreb. In the beginning of the second part of 19th century, when urbanistic planning focused on Donji grad (Lower Town or Downtown), an idea of series of parks bordering the new town centre was born.
They are know as the Lenucci horseshoe because of the shape they form (letter "U") and the name of the landscape gardener who planned them. It is also common to call it "Green horseshoe" as the idea of series of parks was born long before Lenucci (but he contributed the most towards its realisation").
Urbanist trend of reserving enough space for parks, gardens or even whole avenues of trees and flowers still continues.
Zrinjevac is one of Zagreb's most elegant central parks and the northern starting point of the Green Horseshoe. Only a short walk from Ban Jelačić Square, it is known for its tall plane trees, flowerbeds, historic Music Pavilion, fountains and 1884 meteorological column.
Officially called Trg Nikole Šubića Zrinskog, Zrinjevac is free to visit and works particularly well as part of a walk through Zagreb's Lower Town. Most visitors need around 20-30 minutes to explore the park, although it is easy to stay longer for a coffee, concert or break in the shade.
